HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Envy 4500 Printer that uses type 61 ink cartridges. We've only ever bought HP brand ink cartridges. We had to replace the black ink the other day and got the error "Incompatible Cartridge(s)- The indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer." with a symbol of two arrows facing each other like a bow tie |><|. We've tried buying a new cartridge to see if the first was faulty, but got the same error. When we put the empty cartridge back in that we previously used (a 61 XL), the error goes away. We've also tried doing a hard reboot by unplugging the chord from the device and the surge protector, leaving it off for 3 minutes, holding the power button for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back directly into the wall. Lastly, we also tried cleaning the connectors on both the ink cartridges and the carriage within the printer with both a cloth and then later a coffee filter.

Hi @fleagle2012,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

I understand you are facing a cartridge error.

If you have already performed the steps from the document Ink cartridge errors and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

I've sent you a private message with further instructions to get this issue sorted.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
