HP OfficeJet Pro 9013 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Please help, my printer has an error all of a sudden of "Incompatible Cartridges" but it's been printing fine and cartridges are only half full. Message says "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing, remove continuous ink systems and install original HP". On the app on my laptop it also says my printer is offline. I can't even get to the home screen of the printer anymore, it only shows this error so there is no "Hide" or "ignore" option just so that I can scan some documents. I have reset the printer 4 times, unplugged the cord and followed other help steps, taking out the cartridges, cleaning them, cleaning the printer head etc. NOTHING has worked!

@Arle1989, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP OfficeJet Pro 9013 is detecting the cartridges as incompatible, likely due to an issue with the ink system, even though they are not empty. This can be frustrating, but here are some steps to help resolve the issue:

Check for "Third-Party" Ink Systems

If you are using third-party (non-HP) ink cartridges or a continuous ink system, the printer may flag them as incompatible. The printer is designed to use original HP ink cartridges, and non-HP cartridges can sometimes cause this error, even if they are half full.
Solution:

  • Replace the ink cartridges with genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • If you are using a continuous ink system, remove it and replace it with the original HP cartridges.

Clear the Printer’s Cache

Since resetting the printer didn’t help, try clearing its internal cache. This might help the printer reset its error state.
Solution:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Leave it unplugged for 5-10 minutes to clear any residual charge and reset the printer’s internal cache.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check Printer Software on Your PC

The error may also be related to your printer's communication with your computer.
Solution:

  • Open the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant.
  • If the printer is showing as offline, check if it’s properly connected to the network (Wi-Fi or wired connection).
  • You can also try removing and re-adding the printer in the Devices and Printers section of Windows.

Use the Printer's Control Panel to Perform a Reset

Even if the error message is blocking the main menu, you might still be able to access the reset function using the control panel.
Solution:

  • Power cycle the printer again (turn it off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on).
  • If the error persists, try pressing the Wireless and Cancel buttons together, which might reset network settings and allow you to access the printer settings.

Check for Firmware Updates

A firmware issue could be causing the error to persist. Ensure that your printer's firmware is up-to-date.
Solution:

  • Open HP Smart on your PC, go to Printer Settings, and check if any firmware updates are available.
  • Alternatively, you can check for updates directly on the printer via its control panel if it becomes accessible after the reset.

Test the Cartridges in Another Printer

If possible, test the cartridges in a different printer (preferably the same model) to verify if they are functioning properly. This can help rule out faulty cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
