HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

The printer is showing an error message about the cartridges even though they have not been changed.

"Incompatible cartridges: This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing, remove continuous ink system and install original HP (or compatible) cartridges." (message reads for cyan and magenta)

I checked on the HP website and the type of cartridges I have are compatible with the printer. Once again, the cartridges have not been changed since the printer was working.

Hi @wh203,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer is displaying the error: “Incompatible cartridges: This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems..." even though you haven’t changed the cartridges and they are listed as compatible—this typically points to a cartridge recognition issue or a false detection of a continuous ink system.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

  1. Power Reset the Printer
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

  2. Remove and Reinsert the Affected Cartridges
    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Remove the cyan and magenta cartridges.
    • Gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth.
    • Reinsert them firmly and close the door.

  3. Check for Aftermarket Modifications
    • If you’ve ever used a refilledremanufactured, or third-party cartridge, the printer may have flagged it.
    • HP printers can sometimes retain this flag even after switching back to genuine cartridges.

  4. Update Printer Firmware
  5. Use HP’s Cartridge Troubleshooter

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
