Printer was working fine with aftermarket cartridge. Ink ran out. Put in cartridge from same company and received printer error that cartridge was not compatible.

Hi @classaction2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer cartridges!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge is intended for use specifically with the HP OfficeJet Pro 6970. Even if it’s from the same company, compatibility might vary between different batches or models.

2. Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the cartridge.
  • Reinsert the cartridge securely into the correct slot.
  • Close the ink cartridge access door.

3. Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

4. Check for Firmware Updates: HP regularly updates the firmware to ensure compatibility with cartridges. Make sure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date.

Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.

5. Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges and clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and plug the printer back in.

6. Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Using genuine HP ink cartridges is recommended. HP cannot guarantee the reliability of aftermarket cartridges and compatibility issues can arise.

7. Perform a Printer Reset: Sometimes, performing a reset can resolve errors.

  • While the printer is turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
  • Turn the printer on.

I hope this helps.
