Receiving an Imcompatible cartridge error message but the cartridge has worked previously. I do not use instant ink and my cartridge is not labeled instant ink. Warranty on the cartridge end in 2025/11

Hi @229Frustrated,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 suddenly shows an “Incompatible Cartridge” error, especially when the cartridge has worked before and isn’t part of Instant Ink. Let’s walk through the steps to resolve this.

HP-Recommended Fixes for Incompatible Cartridge Error

🔧 Step 1: Power Cycle the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset clears the error:

  1. Turn off the printer using the Power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the wall.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

🔧 Step 2: Clean Cartridge Contacts

This helps restore communication between the cartridge and printer.

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove the cartridge showing the error.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  4. Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  5. Let it dry for 5–10 seconds.
  6. Reinsert the cartridge and close the door.

🔧 Step 3: Check for Firmware Updates

HP occasionally updates firmware to improve cartridge compatibility.

🔧 Step 4: Verify Cartridge Authenticity

Even if it’s labelled HP and not Instant Ink, some cartridges may have non-HP chips or be remanufactured.

  • Make sure the cartridge is HP 952 or 952XL, and not labelled for Instant Ink or refilled.
  • Check the warranty date (yours is valid till 2025/11, which is good).
  • If possible, try a different HP cartridge to test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
