I purchased a HP65 Black ink cartridge in Feb 2024 and used it maybe twice (small print job, a couple pages each) and now it is August 2024 and trying to print and it is showing me low ink?  What the heck, what happen to my ink?  I only use my printer occasionally and can not afford for them to dry up from non use in between print jobs, is there any tips to prevent this from happening?  Or could have received a bad cartridge from HP.com?

Hi @Pod3365,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Ink cartridges can indeed sometimes show low ink levels prematurely, especially if they haven’t been used for a while. Here are a few things you can try to prevent this and troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check the Cartridge Expiry Date: Make sure the cartridge hasn’t passed its expiration date. Even if the cartridge is new, an expired cartridge can lead to issues.
  • Storage Conditions: Store cartridges in a cool, dry place and keep them sealed in their packaging until you're ready to use them. Extreme temperatures or humidity can affect ink quality.
  • Printer Maintenance: Run the printer’s maintenance or cleaning utility to keep the print heads in good condition. This can help prevent clogging, which can sometimes cause incorrect low ink warnings.
  • Use the Printer Regularly: Even occasional use is better than leaving the printer idle for long periods. Running a print job at least once a month can help keep the ink flowing and prevent it from drying out.
  • Check Cartridge Installation: Make sure the cartridge is properly installed and seated correctly in the printer. Sometimes, a loose cartridge can cause false low ink warnings.
  • Printer Firmware Updates: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. HP sometimes releases updates to address issues like incorrect ink level readings.
  • Ink Level Monitoring: Keep an eye on the ink levels through your printer’s software or control panel. This can help you be aware of potential issues before they become a problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
