Ink Cartridges Problem: Error message: "Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed, and then touch OK."

I have gone through the steps suggested by HP Smart and the AI Chat Help features approximately seven times now, but I repeatedly receive the error message above. I had a set of HP 64 cartridges -- one that was only partially used and the other that was brand new -- but I decided to order two new ones from HP. I put them in yesterday and received that same error message.

Does anybody have any ideas?

@Wildcats63, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be to repeatedly see the "Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge" error, especially after trying multiple cartridges and troubleshooting steps.

Here’s a comprehensive set of steps to help resolve this issue:

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset can clear internal errors.

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back into the wall first, then to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer if it doesn’t power on automatically.

Clean Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

Dirt or ink buildup can block communication.

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the indicated cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge using a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Similarly, clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer (carriage slot).
  • Let them dry for 5 minutes, then reinstall the cartridge and close the access door.

Verify You’re Using Genuine HP Cartridges

Double-check that both cartridges are original HP 62 cartridges. Off-brand or refilled cartridges can cause compatibility errors.

Update Printer Firmware

Older firmware can cause ink detection issues.

Make sure the printer is connected to a computer or Wi-Fi.

Try One Cartridge at a Time

If the error still appears:

  • Remove both cartridges.
  • Insert only the black, close the door, and check if the error persists.
  • Repeat with only the tri-color cartridge.
  • This helps identify if only one cartridge is causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
