The original ink bottles that came with my Smart Tank printer were fool proof. It was impossible to spill the ink. Replacement bottles were different. The top has to be removed first and a seal removed. In this state there's a possibility of spilling the whole bottle of ink, which is toxic, and ruining whatever furniture or carpet it lands on. With the seal removed you can replace the top and fill the ink. However, it wasn't obvious at first how to do it. I pressed the bottle down hard but the ink would not fill. What a palaver getting through to customer support. The printer works great, but typically these days, customer support does not.

Hi @dr_rythm,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've encountered some difficulties with the replacement ink bottles for your Smart Tank printer, particularly with the design of the bottle tops and the process of filling the ink. Here are some suggestions and tips that might help:
1. Carefully Read the Instructions
- The replacement ink bottles usually come with instructions on how to use them properly. Take the time to carefully read and follow these instructions to avoid any spillage or mishaps.
Use a Stable Surface
- When filling the ink, make sure to place the printer and ink bottles on a stable and flat surface to minimize the risk of spills.
3. Follow a Slow and Controlled Process
- Remove the top of the ink bottle carefully and slowly to avoid any sudden spills.
- Once the seal is removed, place the top back on the bottle securely before filling the ink. Ensure that it is tightly sealed to prevent leaks.
4. Use Protective Measures
- Consider placing a protective mat or towel underneath the printer while filling the ink to catch any potential spills.
- Wear gloves or use tissues to handle the ink bottles and clean up any spills promptly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Rachel, I should have mentioned that only the coloured ink bottles were different from the originals that came with the printer. The black ink bottle is the same ,so there is no need to go through this super careful procedure when filling the black ink because the method is fool proof. Why change something that works and is convenient, for something that carries a risk and is very inconvenient? It makes no sense. By the way, I worked in the chemical industry for many years carrying out risk assessments prior to working with dangerous substances. It's not always possible to eliminate risk, but Hewlett Packard come up with a safe system for filling ink, then for some reason, changed it for a system that carries risk. As Murphy said, "if it can go wrong it will go wrong"
