Ink cartridge 971xl was installed satisfactorily, then I immediately pulled it out . Now won't work.

HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer.  I replaced yellow ink cartridge971xl, inserted satisfactorily but then I pulled it out immediately because I thought I needed to check something.  Since then, I get "There's a problem with printer and ink system. Turn printer off, then on.   I do that and then I get 'Printer Failure.'  How can I get this printer to work again?  Thanks.

What is the cartridge number?

HP 971xl cartridges are intended for HP Pagewide Printers and not for your HP Officejet printer, it uses HP 902 cartridges in the US:

This is helpful. I appreciate your links to the warranty information and the 'printer failure' error.  My prior yellow ink was in a box labeled 971xl and I think I bought that from HP.  When it ran out, I went to Office Max, showed them the prior box and they ordered another 971xl for me.  

I think I'm out the $80 as I have no proof I bought the first one from HP and Office Max is just going to say they sold me what I asked for.    I checked the warranty information and I can't tell for sure but I think my HP Officejet Pro 6978 all-in-one printer is out of warranty.  If that is the case, should I just toss it?   I have sold my business but I still like using it so I'd rather keep it if I could get it to work.
