Hey guys! I just got a refurbished HP ENVY 6455e and I keep having ink issues. I replaced the ink and it was still showing an out of ink notification. I did a hard reset and cleaned the electric things in the carriage and on the cartridges. I also replaced the new ink cartridges with a different pair in case those were defective, but it’s still not registering new cartridges. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi @Sadiebellz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Ink recognition issues on the HP ENVY 6455e can be frustrating, especially after trying multiple cartridges and resets. Here are the most effective steps to resolve this:

1. Confirm Cartridge Type

  • The ENVY 6455e only works with HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges (or Instant Ink versions).
  • If you’re using third-party or refilled cartridges, the printer may reject them.

2. Clean Electrical Contacts Thoroughly

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove cartridges and gently clean:
    • Cartridge contacts (gold-colored area)
    • Carriage contacts inside the printer
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let everything dry for 10 minutes before reinserting.

3. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn it on and check if the error clears.

4. Update Firmware

5. Disable Cartridge Protection (if enabled)

  • In the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)
    • Enter the printer’s IP address in your browser.
    • Navigate to Settings → Security → Cartridge Protection.
    • Turn it OFF and restart the printer.

6. If Still Not Working

  • This often indicates a faulty printhead or logic board.

I hope this helps.
