I have three unopened HP inkjet cartridges from an old printer that I received via instant ink and now have a different HP printer for work that uses different cartridges. Is there a way to exchange the unopened cartridges for ones that will work on my new HP printer? I do not use instant ink for the work printer since they send me ink from corporate when I need it.

Hi @Jen009

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You’ve done the right thing by holding onto them, and I’ll clarify what options you have:

Instant Ink cartridges cannot be exchanged for standard ones

  • Cartridges supplied through Instant Ink are tied to the subscription program.
  • Once the subscription is cancelled or if you move to a different printer, those cartridges cannot be reused or swapped for standard retail cartridges.
  • They are not interchangeable with non‑Instant Ink printers.

Standard retail cartridges vs. Instant Ink cartridges

  • Retail cartridges purchased separately will work in your new printer.
  • Instant Ink cartridges are coded to work only with the printer enrolled in the subscription.
  • Even if unopened, they cannot be activated in another printer.

What you can do with the unopened Instant Ink cartridges

  • HP provides a recycling program for unused or expired Instant Ink cartridges.
  • You can return them through HP Planet Partners: HP Cartridge Recycling.
  • This ensures they are responsibly handled.

For your work printer

  • Since your company supplies cartridges directly, you’ll need to continue using those.
  • If you ever need to purchase extras yourself, you can find compatible cartridges by entering your printer model here: HP Printer Ink & Toner Finder.
