Hello, I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8720. I just purchased a new black ink cartridge last month and have done a bit of printing but not a ton since then. Just this week I have an error message "The printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing, remove continuous ink system and install original HP for the compatible cartridge." It is an HP cartridge 952 XL. It stopped in the middle of printing an assignment to give me the message and won't print anything now. I have taken the ink cartridge out, restarted the printer, cleaned off the one area, and still no luck. Any ideas? I know there is still ink in there and don't want to waste it with how expensive these are.

Hi @JamieD1219,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating printer issue, especially given the cost of ink cartridges. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the error message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 regarding the HP 952 XL cartridge:
- Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, printer manufacturers release firmware updates that can resolve compatibility issues with cartridges. Check HP's official website for any available updates for your printer model.
- Reset the Printer: You've mentioned restarting the printer, but a complete reset might be more effective. To reset your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720, you typically unplug it from the power source while it's turned on, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in. This can help clear any errors that a simple restart won't fix.
- Clean Contacts: Though you've cleaned off one area, make sure to clean the cartridge contacts and the contacts inside the printer that connect to the cartridge. Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean them. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.
- Re-seat the Cartridge: After cleaning, make sure the cartridge is properly seated in its slot. Sometimes, errors occur simply because the cartridge isn't fully clicked into place.
- Check Cartridge Compatibility: While you've mentioned using an HP 952 XL cartridge, double-check that this model is indeed compatible with your printer. Although it seems correct, ensuring there hasn't been a mistake can help rule out compatibility issues.
- Use Genuine HP Cartridges: The message indicates the printer is not designed for continuous ink systems, but you mentioned using an original HP cartridge. If the printer continues to not recognize the cartridge, it might be a defective cartridge or, in rare cases, a counterfeit. Purchasing a new cartridge from a reputable source might be necessary.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
