I just purchased an HP 67XL replacement cartridge for my printer. I installed in on 01/22/2025 and printed about 5 pages and then the printer stopped working. I received the error message "the indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer." I used the virtual assistant and followed the steps to trouble shoot and had no luck and still get the same error message. The printer will not print. I tried to use the virtual assistant to request a replacement cartridge but it kept telling me I need to contact HP support directly, but I can't even figure out how to do that. Very frustrated here. Thank you for any help.

@misoonk, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
I hear you – printers can be like that one friend who’s totally chill until you need them the most 😅. Don’t worry, though, we’re going to tackle this together and get your printer back to being the MVP it’s meant to be! 💪
Check Cartridge Installation
- Power off the printer and remove the cartridge.
- Inspect the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. Ensure they are clean and free of ink or dust. You can use a clean, dry cloth or lint-free cloth to wipe the contacts.
- Reinstall the cartridge, making sure it's securely placed in the correct slot. Press down firmly until you hear a click.
Check for Cartridge Protection Tape
- When you install a new cartridge, make sure that all the protective tape has been removed from the new cartridge. Often, there is a small orange tape or plastic piece that covers the cartridge's ink nozzles. If left on, it can cause a communication error.
- Remove any leftover plastic or tape from the cartridge if you haven’t already.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 1-2 minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on again. This will reset the printer's internal memory and might resolve the issue.
Update Printer Firmware
- If the printer's firmware is outdated, it might not communicate correctly with new cartridges. To check for updates:
- Go to the printer’s settings menu (either through the printer's display screen or through your computer's printer management tool).
- Look for a "Firmware Update" option and follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware.
- You can also check the HP website for the latest firmware updates for your printer model.

Check Printer's Ink Settings
- Go to the HP printer software on your computer and check the ink status.
- Sometimes, a miscommunication occurs if the printer is still showing the previous cartridge information. Ensure the printer detects the new HP 67XL cartridge as the active one.
- You may want to try running an ink cartridge alignment or printer diagnostic tool from the HP software to help with the communication issue.
Try a Different Cartridge Slot
- If your printer has two slots for cartridges (one for color and one for black), you can try swapping the cartridges. Sometimes, one slot can malfunction while the other works fine.
- If the issue persists in one slot, the issue might be with the printer's hardware itself.
Print a Test Page
- After doing all the steps above, try printing a test page or print a document to see if the issue persists.
Try a Different Cartridge
- If possible, try using a different HP 67XL cartridge to see if the issue persists. This can help confirm whether the problem is with the printer or the cartridge itself.
