Hi @JoeL2017
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 8620 is not recognizing the new ink cartridge, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Ensure the Cartridge is Installed Properly
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Open the cartridge access door and gently remove the ink cartridge.
- Check for any protective tape or covers on the new cartridge (sometimes these are left on and prevent proper contact).
- Reinstall the cartridge, making sure it's securely seated and clicks into place. Close the access door.
2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and remove the ink cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer where the cartridge makes contact.
- Allow both the cartridge and the printer contacts to dry before reinstalling the cartridge.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
- Sometimes an outdated firmware version can cause issues with cartridge recognition. To check for updates:
- Go to HP's support website, enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet 8620), and check for any available firmware updates.
- You can also use the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant software to check and update the firmware.
4. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal system and resolve recognition issues.
5. Try the Cartridge in Another Printer (if possible)
- If you have another compatible printer, try installing the new cartridge in that printer to make sure the cartridge itself isn’t defective.
6. Check the Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure that the new cartridge is compatible with your HP OfficeJet 8620. Sometimes, third-party or remanufactured cartridges can have issues with recognition, especially if they are not genuine HP cartridges.
- If you're using a non-HP cartridge, try replacing it with an official HP cartridge to see if that resolves the issue.
7. Perform a Printer Reset to Clear Error
- With the printer turned on, press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds, then release it.
I hope this helps.
