I have an HP Envy photo printer. I do not print in color. Can I just use black ink in both cartridge ports or do I have to also use a tricolor cartridge in one port ( which I never use) and black in the other? Please help since I’m out of ink and don’t want to buy the tricolor if not needed.

The black cartridge cannot be put in the color cartridge slot, it would damage the printer.

According to the HP Envy 7120 user manual, page 62 says the printer will support single-cartridge mode.

Remove the color cartridge and put it aside, it will print using only the black cartridge.
