@GGHank, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Identifying Used from New Cartridges and Handling Leaking Cartridges!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To manage your ink cartridges effectively and deal with any issues such as leaks, follow these guidelines:

Identifying Used from New Cartridges

Physical Examination: Inspect the cartridges closely. New cartridges typically come sealed in their original packaging, while used cartridges may show signs of wear or ink residue.

Print Quality: Use the printer to perform a test print. New cartridges generally produce crisp and clear prints whereas used ones might show faded or streaky output.

Ink Level Indicators: Check your printer’s ink level indicators or use the printer software tools like HP Utility for Mac OS X or Toolbox for Windows systems to assess the remaining ink in the cartridges.

Note: Using previously used or refilled cartridges may affect the print quality and accuracy of ink level indicators.

Handling a Leaking Cartridge

Remove the Cartridge: Carefully remove the leaking cartridge from the printer to prevent any damage to the printer’s interior.

Inspect for Leaks: Examine the cartridge for any visible leaks. Do not install a leaking cartridge.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
