I have a HP Deskjet 2734e that I purchased maybe 3 years ago. Up until a couple months ago, it’s been working fine. All of a sudden, it will not print black ink. It’s missing half of the words. I have cleaned the cartridges, I have aligned the print heads, I have cleaned the print heads. It will not print correctly.

Hi @Crispycrumbs,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the image. It clearly shows multiple test pages and print quality reports with missing black text and faded black blocks, while color seems fine. This confirms the issue is isolated to the black ink system.

Here’s the troubleshooting process for your HP DeskJet 2734e:

Why This Happens

  • The black cartridge is clogged or defective.
  • Ink nozzle blockage that cleaning cycles didn’t resolve.
  • The cartridge is low or expired.
  • Printhead alignment didn’t fully clear the issue.
  • Firmware or driver issue affecting ink delivery.

Step-by-Step HP Fix

1. Check Ink Levels

  • On the printer control panel or HP Sapp, confirm black ink is not empty.
  • If low, replace with a genuine HP 67 or 67XL cartridge.

2. Run Deep Cleaning

  • In the HP app:
    • Printer Settings > Print Quality Tools > Clean Printhead.
    • Run Level 2 (Deep Clean) if Level 1 didn’t help.
  • Print another diagnostic page.

3. Remove and Inspect Cartridge

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove the black cartridge and check:
    • No protective tape left on the nozzle.
    • No ink buildup, wipe gently with a lint-free cloth.

4. Update Firmware

5. Try a New Cartridge

  • If cleaning and firmware update fail, the black cartridge may be defective.
  • Install a new genuine HP cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
