I'm using HP ink, but I print a page every few months. I'm convinced the ink says it's low even when it isn't. I put in a new cartridge, it prints a few pages, then a few weeks when I go back it is printing faintly and usually gives me a low ink message. At this rate I'm buying a new cartridge for every 4 pages I print. My ink is within its expiration date and there is no way it has dried out. I've cleaned the heads, done all that is suggested but this has been the case since I bought the printer in 2021.

Hi @slsWilkins,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer's ink!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP printer is falsely detecting low ink or experiencing ink drying/clogging issues due to infrequent use. Here are some steps to fix and prevent this issue:

1. Disable Ink Level Monitoring (If Possible)

Some HP models allow you to bypass ink level warnings:

  • Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer → Printing Preferences
  • Look for Ink Level or Cartridge Protection settings and disable them

2. Use Printer Regularly (Prevents Ink Drying)

  • Print at least one-color page per week to keep the ink flowing.
  • If you don’t print often, use the "Printhead Cleaning" feature every month.

3. Store Ink Properly

  • Keep unused cartridges upright in a cool, dark place.
  • Do not remove cartridges unless replacing them to avoid drying out.

4. Check for Clogged Nozzles

Even if you cleaned the printheads, manual cleaning may work better:

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Gently wipe the nozzle area with a lint-free cloth and warm water.
  3. Dry for 10 minutes, then reinstall and print a test page.

5. Firmware Update & Reset Printer

  • Update your printer’s firmware via HP Smart App or HP Support.
  • Perform a hard reset (unplug for 5 minutes, then restart).

6. Consider a Laser Printer (Long-Term Solution)

If you print infrequently, an HP LaserJet printer might be a better option. Toner does not dry out and lasts much longer.
