HP 8600 Pro is giving an error message that says “There is a problem with the printer or ink system.”  The error started when I changed an empty ink cartridge. I have turned off the printer and the error persists. Any suggestions?

Hi @Steven951,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The “Ink System Error” on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 often occurs when there is a problem with the ink system, which can be due to various reasons, such as cartridge issues, printhead problems, or internal system errors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this error:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

Ensure Proper Installation:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the ink cartridges and check for any obstructions or debris in the cartridge slots.
  • Reinstall the cartridges firmly, ensuring they click into place.

Inspect Cartridges:

  • Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP cartridges may not work correctly.

2. Clean Contacts

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Remove the cartridges and gently clean the contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth. Avoid using any liquids.:Look for any visible damage to the cartridges or the printhead. If the cartridges are damaged, replace them.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a Hard Reset:
    • Turn off the printer using the power button.
    • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the electrical outlet.
    • Wait for about 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
    • Turn the printer back on and check if the error is resolved.

4. Check for Printhead Issues

Clean the Printhead:

  • Open the printer’s access door to expose the printhead.
  • Remove the printhead (if applicable) and clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the printhead and ensure it is properly seated.
  • If cleaning does not help, try reinstalling or replacing the printhead. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions on how to remove and reinstall the printhead.

5. Perform Printer Diagnostic Checks

  • Run Built-In Diagnostics:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Printer Maintenance or Diagnostics (the menu options may vary). Run any available diagnostic tools to identify and fix issues.

6. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 model.
    • Download and install any available firmware updates. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve printer functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
