Hello! Was printed to change the yellow ink. Usually a very simple task. Ever since, it says ink system failure. Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you

Hi @Koehler22k,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

An “Ink System Failure” error on your HP printer can be frustrating, especially after a routine task like changing an ink cartridge. This error typically indicates a problem with the ink system, such as an issue with the cartridges, printhead, or internal components. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  1. Turn On the Printer: Ensure your printer is powered on.
  2. Open the Cartridge Access Door: This is usually located on the front of the printer.
  3. Remove and Inspect Cartridges:
    • Remove the yellow ink cartridge and any other cartridges.
    • Check for any protective tape or packaging still on the cartridges.
    • Inspect the cartridges for damage or leaks.
  4. Reinstall Cartridges:
    • Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their correct slots until they click into place.
    • Ensure each cartridge is properly seated.

2. Clean Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

  1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer: For safety, turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  2. Remove Cartridges: Take out the ink cartridges.
  3. Clean Contacts:
    • Cartridge Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges (the copper-colored area).
    • Printer Contacts: Also clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridges make contact.
  4. Dry and Reinstall: Let everything dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.

3. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  1. Open the Printer: Check for any paper jams or obstructions inside the printer.
  2. Remove Jammed Paper: If you find any paper, gently remove it.

4. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.Plug In and Turn On: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

5. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  1. Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website.Search for Your Printer Model: Enter your printer model in the search bar.
  2. Download and Install Drivers: Download and install the latest drivers and software for your printer.

6. Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Open HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Select Your Printer: Choose your printer from the list.
  3. Check for Updates: Go to Printer Settings or Manage Printer and check for firmware updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
