HP DeskJet 2742e All-in-One Printer

I ordered ink online in a pack of color and black. The color ink loads and works just fine but the black cartridge always pulls up an error.

Hi @Megan168, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like there may be an issue with the black ink cartridge itself. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check for Cartridge Compatibility

  • Make sure the black ink cartridge you ordered is compatible with the HP DeskJet 2742e. The correct cartridges are:
    • HP 67 Black
    • HP 67XL Black (high-yield version)

Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge

  • Turn the printer off and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the black cartridge.
  • Check for any protective tape on the cartridge's nozzles and remove it if present.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly into its slot and close the access door.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and check if the error persists.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and remove the black cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge.
  • Let it dry completely and reinstall it.

Try a Hard Reset

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds and plug it back in.
  • Turn on the printer and check if the issue is resolved.

Try a Different Black Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another working HP 67 or 67XL black cartridge to see if the issue is with the printer or the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
