I used to have insta-ink and canceled the service. I bought my own jets at office Max before canceling but now they dont work. What do I do?

Hi @SGprints,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is. You cancelled Instant Ink, bought genuine HP cartridges, and now they won’t work. Here’s why this happens and what you can do:

Why Your Cartridges Don’t Work

  • Instant Ink cartridges are locked to the subscription service. Even if they have ink, they stop working once the service is cancelled.
  • If you bought cartridges before cancelling, but they were Instant Ink cartridges, they will not function without an active subscription.
  • Only standard HP cartridges (non-Instant Ink) will work after cancellation.

How to Fix It

  1. Check Cartridge Type
    • Look at the label:
      • If it says Instant Ink Ready or has the Instant Ink logo, it’s tied to the subscription.
      • You need regular HP cartridges (same model number but without Instant Ink branding).

  2. Buy Standard HP Cartridges
    • For most printers, the same cartridge number exists in two versions:
      • Instant Ink version (subscription only).
      • Retail version (works without subscription).
    • Example: HP 67 vs HP 67 Instant Ink.

  3. Reset Printer Connection
    • Remove the printer from the HP App.
    • Restart the printer.
    • Re-add it in the HP app with your HP account (not Instant Ink).

  4. Update Firmware
    • On printer: Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
    • Or via the HP app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
