Hi @Joemcmillen1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand that you are getting a Printer Failure error message on your HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer.
This issue could occur if the printhead is not installed properly or defective.
Let's go through a few steps that may help to fix this issue.
Step 1: Check for obstructions in the carriage path
- Clear obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer.
- With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer.
Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find.
- Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. If the carriage is stalled or docked to one side of the printer and you cannot move it, continue with these steps.
- Close the carriage access door.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn the printer on.
- If the error persists, continue to the next step. Click here
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Elohi,
Thanks for your response. I should have been more clear in my initial discussion. I tried what you suggested and there are no obstructions in the path of the carriage. It moves freely.
Here is some more intel: I was using bootleg cartridges and the machine works fine, but the ink ran out. I went ahead and bought new HP branded cartridges and all four are new. The machine accepted all of the other three, but the machine won't accept the yellow. The screen on my laptop HP Smart app shows the cartridge is missing (dotted line around the yellow cartridge). I ordered another NEW HP cartridge set and the result is the same. If I put the old (bootleg) yellow cartridge back in the machine accepts it, but the cartridge is empty.
The carriage traverses fine. It looks as though the machine doesn't recognize an HP branded yellow ink cartridge. I cleaned the contacts on the new yellow cartridge and that didn't help. I also looked at the contacts on the carriage and they look fine. I was thinking I could remove the carriage and look more closely at the contacts.
