My accout says my black cartridge is a non-HP ink cartridge. It definitely an HP black 952XL cartridge. How do I get it to correctly id the cartridge?

Hi @ArubaChick,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that your HP account identifies the black cartridge as non-HP even though you installed an Original HP 952XL Black cartridge in your HP OfficeJet Pro 8216 Printer. This can occur if the cartridge is not communicating correctly with the printer, the electrical contact is dirty or damaged, or the printer firmware needs updating.

Please complete the following steps in order, checking the cartridge status after each section.

1. Confirm the cartridge details

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  2. Verify that the cartridge label says HP 952XL Black.
  3. Confirm that the cartridge is installed in the black, color-coded slot and is pushed in firmly.
  4. Check the Warranty Ends date printed on the cartridge.

Some older Original HP 952XL cartridges with a Warranty Ends date of January 2021 or earlier might not be compatible with HP OfficeJet Pro 8210/8216 series printers.

2. Reset the printer

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and check the cartridge status again.

3. Remove and clean the black cartridge

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  2. Press the black cartridge inward to release it.
  3. Inspect the copper-colored electrical contact for protective material, ink, debris, or damage.
  4. Gently wipe the copper-colored contact with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not touch the contact with your fingers.
  5. Reinsert the cartridge into the black slot until it clicks securely into place.
  6. Close the cartridge access door and check whether the message clears.

If the copper-colored contact is missing or damaged, the cartridge must be replaced.

4. Update the printer firmware
HP recommends updating the printer firmware when an Original HP 952-series cartridge produces an identification or compatibility error. Download and install the latest available firmware for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8216 from the HP OfficeJet Pro 8216 Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support.

If the cartridge is within its Warranty Ends date and continues to be identified incorrectly after these steps, please contact HP Support with the cartridge, packaging, and proof of purchase available. The cartridge might qualify for replacement. For complete HP guidance, see HP ink cartridge issues including, incompatible, missing and not recognized errors | HP® Support
