Hi @SS364,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting. I understand you're seeing a "cartridges are not for use in this printer" message and would like to know whether an HP H1XL cartridge is compatible with a printer that uses HP H1 cartridges.

To make sure we provide the correct information, could you please share a few more details?

Please let us know:

  1. What is the exact HP printer model (for example, OfficeJet Pro, ENVY, DeskJet, etc.)?
  2. Which country/region was the printer originally purchased in?
  3. Which cartridges are currently installed?
  4. Are the new cartridges genuine HP cartridges?
  5. Is the error appearing with all cartridges or only a specific color?
  6. Have these cartridges ever worked in this printer before?
  7. Did the issue begin after replacing cartridges or after moving the printer to a different country/region?

A few helpful notes

  • In many HP printer models, the XL version is simply a higher-capacity version of the standard cartridge, so if a printer supports an H1 cartridge, it may also support an H1XL cartridge. However, compatibility depends on the exact printer model and region, so we'd want to verify that first.
  • The error can also appear if:
    • The cartridge is intended for a different geographic region.
    • The cartridge model does not match the printer's supported supplies.
    • The cartridge is damaged or not being recognized correctly.

While we're waiting for the details
Please let us know the printer model and, if possible, the exact cartridge numbers printed on the cartridge labels. That will allow us to confirm compatibility and provide the correct next steps.

We'll be happy to help further once we have that information.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
