It is really worth my while subscribing (even to the free 4 months offer) to HP Instant ink? I probably use between 20-40 sheets per month, sometimes less. Or should I just get my ink cartridges from Amazon or other suppliers?

Instant ink has its own advantages and disadvantages.
I think a monthly subscription for up to 50 pages is 1,99 GPB you didn't specify what printer model you have or aiming at.
If you print that low pages, depending on a printer model you can get in a year with 1-3 ink cartridges ( ink cartridge yield depends on printer model), while on Instant ink one year will cost you 12x1,99.
Instant ink is good for printing photos because you are paying by page, not by consumed ink and printing photos consumes a lot of ink.

Thanks for your reply but I am still having difficulty understanding how Instant Ink works. I have purchased a Envy Photo 6230 printer. If I went for the monthly £1.99 charge do I then get replacement ink cartridges when I have printed off 50 pages and do I have to pay anything for the ink HP send me?

On Instant ink you get a replacement ink cartridge when it gets empty not when you print 50 pages.
For example, if you print 30 pages monthly and ink cartridge can print 300 pages so you will empty one cartridge after 10 months, during that time you will pay 10 x 1,99 and get 1 cartridge after 10 months.
It doesn't matter how much ink you consume, it matters how many pages you consume monthly.
