Hi @Amber1998,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, you can often configure your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus to print using only the black ink cartridge, even if the color cartridges are not functioning. Here’s how you can do that:

Steps to Bypass Color Cartridges

Check Printer Settings:

  • Go to Settings on the printer's control panel.
  • Navigate to Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Look for an option related to Print Settings or Print Quality.

Change Print Preferences on Your Computer:

  • On your computer, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your printer and select Printing Preferences.
  • Under the Color tab, look for an option to print in Black & White or Grayscale. Select it.

Use the HP Smart App:

  • If you’re using the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings and look for options to print in black only or grayscale.

If You Encounter Errors

If the printer still doesn’t allow printing due to the error:

Bypass Color Cartridge Check:

  • Some users have reported that removing the color cartridges while keeping the black cartridge installed can sometimes allow the printer to function in black-and-white mode. However, this may vary by printer model.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the error status.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
