I’m trying to print, I haven’t used my printer in over 3 yrs. I bought a new black ink cartridge 962 XL, replaced the old one and it won’t print. It reads  not compatible with continuous ink systems and I don’t have that. I have reset the printer and it still reads with tar error

Hi @BeccaRN,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message you're seeing about the ink cartridge being "not compatible with continuous ink systems (CIS)" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 can be perplexing, especially since you mentioned you don't use a continuous ink system.

Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help you resolve this issue:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Verify Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridge you purchased is indeed compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015. The HP 962 XL should be compatible, but double-check the packaging and product number to be certain.

Inspect the Cartridge:

  • Check the new cartridge for any protective tape or packaging that might still be attached and remove it if found.
  • Examine the gold contact points on the cartridge for any dust, debris, or damage. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth if necessary.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 1-2 minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on. This can sometimes reset internal electronics and clear error messages.

Reset the Printer to Factory Settings:

  • Note: Resetting to factory settings may erase some settings, so proceed with caution.
  • From the printer's control panel, navigate to the settings or setup menu and find the option to reset to factory defaults.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Since your printer has been unused for over three years, its firmware might be outdated. Updating the firmware can fix compatibility issues with new ink cartridges.
  • Download the latest firmware update for your printer from the HP support website.
  • Follow the instructions on the website to update your printer’s firmware.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Remove the ink cartridge from the printer.
  • Turn off the printer and unplug it again.
  • Wait for a minute, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridge carefully and ensure it is seated properly.

Check for Printer Errors in Software: HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Open the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool (if available for Windows XP) or the printer's software suite on your computer.
  • Run a diagnostic to identify and resolve any software-related issues.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Power off the printer.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let the contacts dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
