Ive discovered that HP block my printer from working with non-HP ink cartidges.  There is nowhere that i contractually agreed with HP to only use HP cartiridges in this printer and there was nothing on the packaging that the printer came in when purchased to indicate that the device would only work with HP cartidges. As this is clearly an illegal anti-competitive practice, has anyone in Australia followedup/reported this matter to the ACCC or state departments of fair trading?

Hi @Anewname,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

I purchased my HP Officejet Pro 6960 printer 9 Jan 2018. At that time, HP did not disclose that the use of non-HP cartridges would be blocked by the printer firmware or might be blocked by future firmware updates.  The use of non-manufacturer cartridges is and has been a common practice.  If HP had made it known that non-HP cartridges would be blocked I would not have bought the printer. This is my printer and I have a moral and legal right to use any brand of cartridge I like. HP is essentially holding my printer to ransom leaving me with no choice other than to buy HPs much more expensive cartridges or to write off my printer and throw it in the bin.

I have researched this issue and discovered that on 3 May 2018, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued court enforceable orders regarding this very behaviour and ordered HP to pay compensation to Australian owners of a range of specific HP printers.  This quote is from the ACCC media release “HP has admitted that by not disclosing to consumers that these printers, or the firmware update, included technology preventing the use of certain non-HP ink cartridges, it was likely to have breached the Australian Consumer Law by engaging in false, misleading or deceptive conduct.” https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/hp-to-compensate-printer-customers The orders referred to a list of specific printer models and did not include the Office Jet Pro 6960, probably because it was a newer model and released after their investigation. Remarkably, even after making an admission of the illegality of its earlier actions and policy, HP continued the same behaviour.  At this time, I would like HP to provide me with an updated firmware for my printer which removes the block on non-HP cartridges or I intend to report this matter to the ACCC.  Hopefully they will take action once again against HP.
