Hi @EGoebel,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you've just installed new genuine HP 63XL cartridges into your HP ENVY 4520 printer and it's displaying a "not compatible" error message, there are several steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Make sure you have installed the correct cartridges. HP printers are very specific about cartridge compatibility, and using the wrong ones can trigger compatibility errors. Ensure that the cartridges are indeed HP 63XL and are compatible with your printer model.
  • Remove and Reinstall Cartridges: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and then carefully remove the cartridges. Inspect them for any protective tape or plastic that might need to be removed. Reinstall the cartridges firmly into their respective slots and make sure they click into place securely.
  • Restart the Printer: After reinstalling the cartridges, plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on. Allow it to go through its startup process, and then check if the error message persists.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, HP releases firmware updates that can affect cartridge compatibility. Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually find firmware updates on the HP support website.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Carefully remove the cartridges again. Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printer carriage. Let them dry for a few minutes, then reinsert the cartridges and power on the printer.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: Sometimes, a hard reset can resolve cartridge errors. To do this, unplug the printer from the power source and wait for about 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
