Hi @Dana-m

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are the steps you can follow to resolve the “cartridge installed incorrectly” error on your HP OfficeJet 200 printer:

Power Reset

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer while it is still on.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure you are using the correct cartridge model for the HP OfficeJet 200 printer.
  • The printer requires HP 62 or HP 62XL cartridges. Verify both black and tri-color cartridges are genuine and compatible.

Reinstall Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove both cartridges carefully.
  • Inspect the cartridges for protective tape—make sure all orange pull tabs and plastic tape covering the nozzles are removed.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their correct slots (black on the right, tri-color on the left). Push until they click into place.
  • Close the access door.

Clean Electrical Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Connect the printer to your Windows PC.
  • Open the HP App.
  • Check for updates and install the latest firmware to ensure proper cartridge recognition.

Test Print

  • After reinstalling, print a test page to confirm the error is cleared.
  • If the error persists, try another cartridge if available to rule out a defective one.
