I have owned my printer 6 years.  You broke it when you "updated" it.  You are stealing from the re-manufactured cartridge market.  You FORCED printing through an app so you could track and control the product.  No one wants colored ink!  You won't allow one to set the printer to BLACK ONLY because your app has an intentional error so people actually have to use your outrageously overpriced ink.  Your product and your service sucks.  No more HP products.

Hi @JunieB1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear your frustration, and I want to acknowledge it before anything else. I completely understand how disruptive it feels when a device that has served you well for years suddenly doesn’t behave the way you expect after an update.

To be transparent with you, HP printers are designed to work with HP Original cartridges or cartridges with Original HP chips/electronics. This is outlined in HP’s cartridge policy here: HP Color LaserJet Pro 4201, 4202, 4203 - Configure the HP toner-cartridge-protection supply settings....

A few key points from that policy:

  • HP printers may include dynamic security, which blocks cartridges that use non-HP chips or modified electronics.
  • This security feature only affects cartridges that are new or remanufactured with third-party chips; refilled cartridges with the original HP chip will continue to function.
  • Firmware updates can refresh the security system, which may cause previously working non-HP or remanufactured cartridges to stop being recognized.
  • Customers are always able to use genuine HP cartridges without interruption, and HP does provide high-yield (XL) options to reduce cost per page.

That said, your experience matters. While HP’s goal is to protect print quality, security, and the printer hardware, I understand how this comes across to you as limiting choice, especially after years of use with alternatives.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
