Microsoft Windows 11

We have  HP LaserJet M611, HP Laserjet LJ300-400 Color MFP M375-M475 and HP Color LaserJet Pro M453-4 UPD P5 all of which are showing smudges on printed documents.  How can we clean the printers to eradicate this?  Thanks.

Hi @Kerry7771

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP LaserJet printers are showing smudges on printed documents, it’s important to clean them properly to maintain print quality. Here are steps to clean each of your printers:

General Cleaning Steps for LaserJet Printers:

Gather Supplies:

  • Lint-free cloths or microfiber cloths
  • Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 90% or higher)
  • Soft brush or compressed air
  • Cleaning sheets (if available)

Turn Off and Unplug the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.

Cleaning the Interior:

Open the Printer:

  • Open the printer's access panel to expose the toner cartridges and imaging drum.

Remove the Toner Cartridges:

  • Carefully take out the toner cartridges. Set them on a flat surface covered with a cloth to avoid any spills.

Clean the Imaging Drum (if applicable):

  • If your printer has a separate imaging drum, gently wipe it with a lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the surface with your fingers.

Clean the Interior:

  • Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove any toner dust or debris inside the printer.
  • Wipe down any accessible areas inside with a cloth slightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol.

Check for Residue:

  • Inspect the rollers and remove any visible toner residue. Smudges can often come from toner on the rollers.

Cleaning the Exterior:

  1. Wipe Down the Printer:
    • Use a damp cloth to clean the exterior of the printer. Avoid using any harsh chemicals.

Cleaning Specific Printers:

HP LaserJet M611:

  • Follow the general cleaning steps above, ensuring to check the rollers and drum.

HP LaserJet LJ300-400 Color MFP M375-M475:

  • For color models, ensure that each color toner cartridge is checked and cleaned if necessary. Color misalignment can also cause smudging.

HP Color LaserJet Pro M453:

  • Similar to the above steps, ensure that the imaging drum is cleaned and that all color cartridges are properly seated.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
