Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I installed an HP ink cartridge in my HP Deskjet 2512 printer and got the message "used or counterfeit cartridge detected." This is a cartridge that I purchased at Walmart (I have the receipt). It was boxed with no evidence of tampering.

It leaked in the printer and ruined it. I was on deadline so I ran out and bought an HP 2752 e and new cartridges at Walmart. During set up, when I installed the ink that came with that printer (it was inside the box) the black ink cartridge also said "used or counterfeit cartridge." I had to install the extra cartridge I bought at Walmart and did not have any problems.  Is there any way to get my money back if I send you the cartridges/packaging and receipts that were alerted to be "used or counterfeit" although I bought them at Walmart? FYI, HP Smart gave me the message if you can access my history and those messages. I would also like some credit, if it was a bad batch of HP ink cartridges, for my ruined Deskjet 2512 .  FYI, I am now on a purchasing plan with HP Smart and will not have to buy HP ink from Walmart unless it is an emergency. Thank you.

Hi @Mel_O1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are receiving the "used or counterfeit cartridge detected" error message on your HP Deskjet 2512 printer, even though you purchased the cartridge from a reputable source like Walmart, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check for Genuine Cartridge: Ensure that you have installed a genuine HP cartridge that is compatible with your printer model. Counterfeit or third-party cartridges can sometimes trigger this error. Make sure the cartridge you purchased is specifically designed for your HP Deskjet 2512.
  • Reinstall the Cartridge: Sometimes, simply removing and reseating the cartridge can resolve the issue. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, and then carefully remove the cartridge. After a few seconds, reinstall the cartridge securely.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Ink residue or dust on the cartridge contacts can cause detection issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it, and remove the cartridge. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge. Be cautious not to touch the nozzles or other parts of the cartridge.
  • Update Firmware: Outdated printer firmware can sometimes cause false detection errors. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and check for any available firmware updates. If there's an update, follow the instructions to install it.

Remember that HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP cartridges, and using third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes lead to compatibility issues. However, if you are certain that the cartridge you purchased is genuine, the steps above should help you address the "used or counterfeit cartridge detected" error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
