I have an HP Laser 1005w printer. Recently, I installed a new cartridge in the printer. After some usage, the toner/ink got finished.

I refilled the cartridge, but even after refilling, the printer still shows an error 08 “black toner depleted” on the indicator.

Please let me know:

Whether the cartridge or chip needs to be reset or replaced.

Hi @myselfprashant

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details so clearly, and I truly appreciate the effort you’ve already put into refilling the cartridge yourself. I understand how frustrating it must feel to see the “08 black toner depleted” message even after you’ve gone through the refill process.

Let’s walk through this together step by step so the printer can sense the cartridge properly again.

Why this happens

Your HP Laser 1005w uses a toner cartridge with a chip that tracks usage. When the cartridge is refilled, the toner level inside is restored, but the chip may still report “empty” because it hasn’t been reset. That’s why the error persists even though toner is physically present.

Steps you can try

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer completely.
  • Unplug the power cable for at least 2 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and restart.
This clears temporary memory and forces the printer to recheck the cartridge.

Reseat the Cartridge

  • Open the toner access door.
  • Remove the cartridge carefully, making sure no toner spills.
  • Inspect the chip area on the cartridge for dust or toner residue. Wipe gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

Check the Cartridge Chip

  • If the cartridge has been refilled, the chip may need to be reset or replaced.
  • Some refill kits include a replacement chip. If yours didn’t, you may need to obtain a compatible chip separately. Without this, the printer will continue to show “depleted.”

Run a Printer Reset via Control Panel

  • On the printer’s panel, navigate to Settings > Supplies > Reset Supplies.
  • Select “Black Cartridge” and confirm reset.
(If this option is not available, the chip replacement becomes necessary.)

Test Print

  • After reseating or resetting, print a test page.
  • If the error clears, you’re good to go. If not, the chip is almost certainly the cause.

Key Point

Refilling restores toner but does not reset the chip’s memory. For continued use, either a chip reset or replacement is required. Once that’s done, the printer will recognize the cartridge as full again.

I admire the initiative you’ve taken to refill the cartridge—it shows resourcefulness. With these steps, you should be able to bring the printer back to smooth operation.
