Greetings,
I purchased an M281cdw a couple years ago (it's now out of warranty), we don't print heavy volumes its a home use printer... I purchased a backup set of toner from Staples about 3yrs ago knowing that the cartridges that come with the printer don't last super long. Items bought: HP 202X TriColor Toner Cartridges High Yield 3 Pack CF500XM (Item: 24403551) and HP 202X Black Toner Cartridge High Yield 2 Pack CF500XD (Item: 24403553).
Yellow just ran out on me (all others are near empty/close behind as well), so I swapped in the new yellow cartridge... printer does its diagnostics and tells me "Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip." (shows yellow), I scanned the QR code on the box and the HP site states its a valid cartridge, again it came from Staples, I tried wiping the contacts on the yellow cartridge, I compared it to the original 202A the printer came with... I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work or that it would be counter fit. I've learned my lesson ruining a perfectly good HP 1600 laser jet by being a cheapskate and getting refilled/aftermarket toner, and that is not the case here.
How do I resolve this? Since the original toner lasted me 3yrs I doubt staples will exchange it at this point, but its a brand new genuine HP tri pack and I am completely stumped on why it isn't working.
Did I get a defective pack of toner by chance? How can I resolve this? Is there a way to get the machine to accept the new cartridge? I have receipt from staples, the packaging (boxes), etc. all still.
Added info to main post:
The printer cartridge I installed was purchased in December of 2019 as a spare set shortly after buying the printer, manufacturer date of the cartridge I installed shows 20190723. The printer firmware is up to date and reflects date code of: 20221010.
EDIT 12/1/22:
I've resolved the issue... it seems HP killed its own (older) cartridges trying to kill third party toners. I had to follow the instructions for those who have off brand/refill cartridges to get it to work - namely downgraded my firmware to 20200612 to before HP attempted to kill off aftermarket cartridges. I guess my 2019 bought cartridges are so old the genuine HP chips installed are no longer considered legit so I hit the nail on the head with the its banned due to being "too old" note below. After downgrading and swapping the cartridge out again it immediately accepted the same cartridge it kept telling me had a non-HP chip in it!!!
To HP if you read this: this does not make me a happy consumer you BANNED your OWN genuine toners!! I'm now on 20200612 (turned off auto updates, etc.) and I'm stuck using this 2.5yr old firmware (at this moment of writing) until such time that I use up all my cartridges I bought (2x black, and 1 tri pack all high capacity x models... all bought in 2019). Given my low print volume for home use that'll last me YEARS. That's just nuts to me, but at least I got it working again. I also absolutely love how I can't get any support other then this message board because my printer is out of warranty. Whenever the day comes to replace this printer I think I may get a Brother color LaserJet, I have a monochrome bother printer and that thing is phenomenal - toner is cheaper to (also only use OEM for it, only ~$55 a cartridge!).

What firmware revision are you using on this printer. If you print the configuration report from the control panel it will list the installed firmware. In some cases older firmware can have an issue with newer cartridges. This is because the printer does not know that the cartridge is genuine.

Other update: I just tried turning off cartridge protection in the supplies menu and reinserting it and it still comes up the cartridge is blocked due to non-HP chip.
Is there perhaps any issues with defective cartridges being issued back when I bought mine? Is HP now blocking cartridges that are "too old"? I've never ran into this issue before and it's rather frustrating. It really doesn't help that I have no support other then being funneled to the virtual assistant or this message board, sure my printer is out of warranty, but in this case the cartridge I don't think is, and that seems to be broken. The machine works just fine if I throw the old empty cartridge in there (aside from not printing any yellow).
Thank you for your assistance by the way.
