HP LaserJet Pro M404dw

Is it still correct that the software for my Laserjet Pro M404 in actual effect needs to be HP brand, per the software in the computer? This is a factual question. Responses about quality of print experience, whether involving HP's views or others', are not part of my inquiry here.

I am not asking what is smart or wise or ought to be preferred, etc. I am asking what is possible, what cartridge(s) can be used to print in my printer.

My firmware version is 002.2247A, which on purpose is not updated because I am unsure whether a given update is helpful or restrictive, in my view.

Cartridges that use or reuse a genuine HP chip will work. According to the user guide you should be able to disable cartridge policy which enforces use of HP cartridges when turned on and then be able to use 3rd party. Yes there is on the M4040 printer a settings option for turning off the print cartridge policy.

However, I have two types of evidence that this feature is often not effective:

(1) My rep at an authorized HP seller of cartridges tells me that this feature does not work with good reliability, and that he has many customers who cannot use non-HP cartridges in M4040 laser printers, despite disabling the cartridge policy in printer settings.

(2) My personal experience on my HP printer is that disabling the cartridge policy in printer settings is not effective in allowing the printer to use a non-HP cartridge.

HP needs to address this type of evidence. Is this feature-off policy effective, or really only protective window dressing?
