HP Color Laser MFP 178nw

Hi, I have ghosting on my print about 210mm down the page, I use original hp toner and I have cleaned the drum, also I noticed on the drum there is a like a blade that I can't clean, I've only printed about 400 copies, does the drum need changing, but I do not want to pay 120 quid when it could be something else, or shall I throw it down the garden and buy another

Hi @Ineedahammer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Ghosting issues on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP178nw can be frustrating, especially when the problem seems persistent despite your efforts. Ghosting usually appears as faint duplicate images or text on the page, and it can be caused by several factors. Here's a systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving the issue:

1. Check for Common Causes

Toner Cartridge Issues:

  • Even though you’re using original HP toner, ensure that it’s properly installed. Sometimes, a cartridge that’s not seated correctly can cause ghosting.

Drum Issues:

  • The drum unit is crucial for proper printing. If cleaning the drum didn’t resolve the issue, it might be a sign that the drum is defective or nearing the end of its life, even with only 400 copies.

Fuser Unit:

  • The fuser unit is responsible for melting the toner onto the paper. If it's not working correctly, it can cause ghosting. Inspect the fuser for damage or wear.

Paper Quality:

  • Ensure you are using the recommended paper type and quality for your printer. Poor-quality or incorrect paper can sometimes cause print issues.

2. Additional Troubleshooting Steps

Print a Diagnostic Page:

  • Print a diagnostic or test page from the printer’s settings menu. This can help you determine if the ghosting issue is consistent across all prints or just specific documents.

Print a Cleaning Page:

  • Many printers have a built-in cleaning function. Refer to the printer’s manual or settings menu to run a print head or drum cleaning cycle.

Inspect and Clean the Drum Thoroughly:

  • Since you mentioned cleaning the drum, ensure that you’re following the manufacturer's guidelines. For most laser printers, you can gently wipe the drum with a lint-free cloth. Avoid touching the drum surface with your fingers as oils can cause issues.

Check for Paper Debris:

  • Look inside the printer for any pieces of paper or debris that might be affecting the print quality. Ensure there’s no paper stuck in the paper path.

Reset the Printer:

  • Sometimes, resetting the printer can resolve various issues. Power off the printer, wait a minute, and then turn it back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
