Hi @WCMIRTSCH1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how disappointing it feels when you’re excited to print a photo and it comes out far too red, washed, unnatural, and nothing like what you see on your screen. The HP Envy Photo 7858 normally produces beautiful, balanced photos, so when they suddenly look overly red, it is almost always caused by one of a few fixable issues.

Let’s walk through this together gently, step by step.

Step 1: Make Sure All Three Colors Are Actually Flowing

When photos come out red, it usually means cyan (blue) is not printing correctly.

Here’s how to check:

  1. On the printer’s screen, tap Setup
  2. Tap Tools
  3. Tap Print Quality Report

Look at the blocks:

  • If cyan looks faded, streaky, or missing, the printer will mix extra magenta + yellow → resulting in red photos.

If cyan is bad, go to Step 2.

Step 2: Deep Clean the Printhead (Not the basic clean)

The ENVY Photo 7858 has two cleaning levels.

  1. Tap Setup
  2. Tap Tools
  3. Tap Clean Printhead
  4. After it finishes, you’ll see an option to Deep Clean
  5. Run that second‑level cleaning

Once finished, print another Print Quality Report.

If cyan is back, try printing a photo again.

Step 3: Confirm You Are Using Photo Paper and the Correct Settings

Red‑tinted photos often happen when the printer thinks you’re printing on plain paper.

Please check this carefully:

On your phone or computer:

When printing a photo, open Print Settings and select:

  • Paper Type → HP Photo Paper
  • Paper Size → 4x6 or 5x7 or Letter Photo (whatever you’re using)
  • Print Quality → Best or Photo

If the printer uses plain paper mode, colors will look red, flat, and blotchy.

Step 4: Make Sure You Are Using Genuine HP Cartridges

The 7858 is very sensitive to ink formulation. Non‑HP cartridges often shift color balance toward red or magenta.

If one cartridge was recently replaced, this might explain the imbalance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
