I have done this 3 times. I only use genuine HP cartridges and this far I have used 1 magenta cartridge purchased as a single cartridge to replace- no success and then a color pack of 3 cartridges. I continue to get this message. I spent a lot of money for the printer and the genuine HP cartridges.

What else can you suggest to fix this issue?? I’m thinking HP is no longer providing a quality product or helpful tech support without charging extra.

Hello @elrichs

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Officejet Pro 7740.

We understand your concern, especially after replacing the magenta cartridge multiple times with genuine HP cartridges and continuing to receive the "Supply System Problem" error on your HP Officejet Pro 7740.

Since multiple new magenta cartridges have produced the same result, the issue is less likely to be the cartridge itself and more likely related to cartridge detection, printhead contacts, or the ink delivery system.

Please try the following advanced troubleshooting steps:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and then to the printer.
  6. Turn the printer back on.

2. Inspect and Reseat the Magenta Cartridge

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove the magenta cartridge.
  3. Verify all protective tape has been removed.
  4. Check for damage, ink residue, or debris on the cartridge.
  5. Reinstall the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

3. Clean Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

  1. Remove the affected cartridge.
  2. Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge.
  3. Clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer carriage.
  4. Allow everything to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

Since your printer is connected via Wi‑Fi, access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser and check for available firmware updates. Firmware updates can resolve cartridge recognition and supply system issues.

5. Test with the Previously Installed Cartridge

If available, temporarily reinstall one of the earlier magenta cartridges. If the same error appears across multiple cartridges, it further indicates the issue may be with the printhead or cartridge sensing circuitry rather than the cartridges themselves.

6. Print a Printer Status Report

If the printer allows access to the control panel menus, print a Printer Status Report or Network Configuration Report and check for any additional supply-related alerts.

Take care and have an amazing day!
