I was having problems with my printer staying connected to my Mac, and after using these forums, it was suggested I assign a new manual IP address. I did that, and now my printer stays connected to my computer with no issues, BUT I get a message every time I print that says "connect this printer to use HP Instant Ink". I have to hit either "cancel" or "ok" before the print job will come out. 

 

Can I keep my manual IP AND still use Instant Ink? Or could there be something I'm missing here?

Yes, you can keep the manual IP and use HP Instant Ink.

 

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

I have already done that. I download the update, open the installer, and on the second step, it always says "no upgrade available for your device". I've tried it a few times.

That just means that the printer is already updated.
