My son has returned from university with a printer, HP Envy Pro 6420.  We have bought new cartridges but on installing are asked to insert setup cartridges which we do not have.

You will have to try some of the following known solutions.   Try the 6458e at the bottom first.

If one of them works please let me know which one so I can add 6420 to the list

If your printer is asking for setup cartridges and you do not have them try calling HP support for help.
