CYAN 951 cartridge ink ran out. Placed full CYAN 951 cartridge in printer and got "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP. Thinking I have a defective new cartridge, I ordered another new CYAN 951 cartridge from Staples. Upon installing, this new cartridge has the same issue and printer shows the same message. I have cleaned contacts, checked cartridges for US use, turned printer off and unplugged. Don't know what else to do other than try a 3rd CYAN 951 cartridge. I now have 2 under warranty cartridges that do not work.

Hi @MarkRDU
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating issue where your HP printer isn’t recognizing the Cyan 951 ink cartridge, even after replacing it with a new one. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot this problem:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
Ensure the Cyan 951 cartridge is installed properly. Sometimes, even a small misalignment can cause the printer to not recognize the cartridge.
- Remove the cartridge and reinstall it, making sure it's securely seated in the correct slot.
- Press gently to ensure it clicks into place.
2. Clean the Contacts Again
Although you’ve cleaned the contacts, it’s crucial to make sure both the cartridge contacts and the printer's contact points are completely clean. Dirt or ink buildup can prevent proper communication between the printer and the cartridge.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Use a soft lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with water or rubbing alcohol to clean both the cartridge contacts (the gold-colored metal contacts on the cartridge) and the printer’s cartridge slot contacts.
- Let them dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.
3. Perform a Printer Reset
Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear any error states or faults in the printer's memory:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cable from the printer and wait for about 1-2 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
