I am attempting to print with black ink only and have entered the correct setting for black only. I used to get a pop up that said, "Print in Black only?" and I would click "Yes" and it worked consistently. I replaced the spent color cartridges and now the printer will not print anything. It says "Replace damaged ink Cartridge", referring to a color cartridge I just replaced.

Hi @Persist2Top,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 is displaying a "damaged printer cartridge" error, especially after replacing color cartridges, it can be frustrating. Here are some detailed troubleshooting steps to help resolve this issue and get your printer back to working properly:

1. Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Turn On Printer: Make sure your printer is on and the cartridges are accessible.
  • Open Cartridge Access Door: Open the door to access the cartridges.
  • Remove and Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the color cartridges and carefully reinstall them, ensuring they click into place and are securely seated.
  • Check for Damage: Examine the color cartridges for any visible damage or leaks. If you see any issues, try using a new cartridge.

2. Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn Off Printer: Power off your printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove Cartridges: Carefully remove the color cartridges.
  • Clean Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printer’s cartridge holder. Ensure everything is dry before reinstalling the cartridges.

3. Check for Ink Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges that are compatible with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620.
  • Check Cartridge Model: Double-check that the cartridges match the model number recommended for your printer.

4. Reset Printer::

  • Turn Off Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug Back In: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

5. Check Printer Settings:

  • Access Printer Settings: On your computer, go to “Control Panel” > “Devices and Printers”, right-click your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620, and select “Printer Properties”.
  • Set to Print in Black Only: Go to the “Preferences” or “Advanced” tab, and set the option to print in black only. Ensure that you have saved these settings.
  • Print Dialogue: When sending a print job, confirm that you have selected “Print in Black Only” in the print settings dialog box.

6. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers:

  • HP Support Website: Visit the HP support website and enter your printer model. Check for available firmware updates and follow the instructions to install them.
  • Download Latest Drivers: Download and install the latest printer drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 from the HP support website.

7. Perform a Printer Diagnostic Test::

  • Download Tool: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the HP website. This tool can help diagnose and fix various printing issues.

8. Check for Error Messages and Codes:

  • Printer Display: Note any error codes or messages displayed on the printer’s screen and refer to the printer’s manual or HP’s support website for specific troubleshooting steps related to those codes

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
