My HP Envoy 5530 printer suddenly stopped working during a print job, giving me an error that the black print cartridge was incompatible.  I have genuine HP cartridges and this never happened before.  I took out and reinstalled the cartridge same error.  Did a hard reset - same errror.  Went to Staples got new cartridge, both color and black and reinstalled.  Same error.  What can I do next?  I really love this printer and never had the slightest trouble with it before.

@carol860, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with the frustrating "Incompatible Cartridge" error on your HP Envy 5530, especially with the black cartridge. Since you've already tried reinstalling, performing a hard reset, and using new genuine cartridges, let's explore some effective next steps to resolve this issue.

Clean the Electrical Contacts

Sometimes, even a small amount of ink residue or oil can prevent the printer from recognizing the cartridge.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove both cartridges.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth or coffee filter slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Gently clean:
    • The gold-colored contacts on the cartridge (avoid the ink nozzles).
    • The corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  5. Allow everything to dry for about 10 minutes, then reinstall the cartridges.

Check the Cartridge Type and Region

Ensure that you are using the correct cartridges for your printer model:

  • The HP Envy 5530 uses HP 61 or HP 61XL ink cartridges.
  • Verify that the black cartridge is indeed HP 61 Black.
  • Make sure the cartridge is not from a different region.

Bypass Cartridge Error (for Troubleshooting Only)

If cleaning and replacing the cartridges doesn't work, you can try this method to temporarily override the error:

Steps:

  1. Remove the black cartridge and leave the color cartridge installed.
  2. Attempt to print using color-only mode (this can simulate grayscale).
  3. If this works, the issue is likely isolated to the black cartridge system.

Update the Printer Firmware

Firmware updates can sometimes resolve cartridge recognition issues.

Steps:

  1. Go to HP Software & Drivers.
  2. Search for “HP Envy 5530 e-All-in-One”.
  3. Download and install the latest firmware.
  4. After rebooting, insert the new cartridges again.

Printer’s Internal Memory Reset

Resetting the printer's internal memory can sometimes clear faulty cartridge data.

Deep Reset Steps:

  1. Remove all cartridges.
  2. Unplug the power cable without turning off the printer.
  3. Wait for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Plug the power back in.
  5. When prompted to install cartridges, insert only the color cartridge first and wait.
  6. Then insert the black cartridge and wait to see if the error clears.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
