Recently my 5540 printer has started only printing headings, no text (and only in blue).

@JE-AUS, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?
  • Try making a standalone copy of a document and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Make sure the printer firmware is up to date

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Perform the steps from - Fixing Poor Print Quality

Check the ink levels, clean the ink cartridges, and print a print quality page to check the result.

Let me know how it goes.

OK , printer is updated.

Mac is up to date.

I have tried various documents ( from Word, emails, PDFs) with the same issue

The only success I seem to have is from a site (Dinnerly.com.au) from which I print meal recipes.

I even tried printing your response and this was the result.

Did you try the steps from - Fixing Poor Print Quality

Check the ink levels, clean the ink cartridges up to 2 times, and print a print quality page to check the result?

Keep me posted.

Have tried your suggestions with no progress.

Eventually reset to default settings but still no good.

see attached two items. 1) screen shot of document

                                               2) what printed

It seems that any black print is being printed white, if that is possible.

@JE-AUS

Have you tried using an alternate black ink cartridge?

Also, did you try making a copy in black and color from the scanner glass to check the result?

Keep me posted.
