I am having the same problem with the HP black 950XL cartridge being seen by the printer as defective. Had the same problem with the color cartridges, which was fixed by replacing the cartridges. Tried 2 new and different HP 950XL cartridges bought from the Amazon HP Store (india). All my cartridges are Z10 cartridges as show as such on the printer ink screen. However, the 950XL is listed as "-950XL" versus "HP950XL" All of this started after a firmware update. My printer is out of warranty and the first cartridge not to work is also beyond the 30 day warranty. The 2nd cartridge was returned to Amazon HP store.
I want this printer to work but like many others I am getting frustrated as this appears to be a by-product of a firmware update. I have spent a lot of money on new cartridges following the direction of HP Support but my printer still does not print.
What else can I try?

After several months of trying, I gave up and waited for a response in this community blog. About 2 weeks ago the printer suddenly accepted the genuine HP black cartridge that had been installed all along, and now works fine. Nothing had changed and I took no other action, it just started working again. I am baffled but glad it works now.

Hi @skeeter1952,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing an Ink Cartridge issue with your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Was there any recent update on the printer prior to the issue?
- Do you see any Error message on the screen?
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product

I tried several times to perform the power drain procedure and the cartridge is still not working.
The firmware was updated prior to this cartridge problem and is current to the latest firmware version (FDP1CN2022AR).
The printer driver is 13.33.00.2473.
I cannot run HP Smart on my Win 10 HP laptop - it locks up every time I try; but HP Smart does work on my iphone and ipad.
The printer screen states "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged. Remove then and replace with new cartridges." installing a new cartridge yields the same error.
HP Smart information provides the following error statement "The indicated cartridges are not communicating with the printer. If the problem persists, replace the cartridges." It also states that the cartridge is a genuine HP cartridge.
