Hi @liza4,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is still indicating that the cartridge is empty even after you've replaced it with a new one, and you've already tried restarting and unplugging the printer, there are several additional steps you can take to resolve this issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

1.1. Ensure Proper Installation

  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the new cartridges and reinstall them, ensuring they are properly seated in the correct slots. The cartridges should click into place firmly.

1.2. Inspect Cartridges

  • Check Packaging: Verify that all protective tape or packaging materials have been removed from the new cartridges.
  • Check Expiry Date: Ensure the cartridges are not expired or defective.

2. Clean Cartridge Contacts

2.1. Clean Contacts

  • Turn Off Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged.
  • Remove Cartridges: Take out the cartridges.
  • Clean Contacts: Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges and inside the cartridge slots using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly moistened with distilled water. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.

3. Perform a Printer Reset

3.1. Power Cycle

  • Unplug: Disconnect the printer from the power source and wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug Back In: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

3.2. Factory Reset (If Applicable)

  • Access Menu: Navigate to the printer’s control panel and find the settings menu.
  • Restore Defaults: Look for an option to restore factory settings or reset the printer. Confirm the reset if available.

4. Update Printer Firmware

4.1. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website and look for firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.
  • Download and Install: Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware update.

5. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

5.1. Check Cartridge Model

  • Confirm Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridges you are using are compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. The cartridges should be the correct model and type for your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
