HP Recommended

My HP Officejet J4550 uses HP 901 cartridges which have been discontinued. The HP 60 is the supposed replacement.  When I replaced an HP 901 tri-color with an HP 60 tri-color the printer gives the message "incompatible print cartridge(s): tri-color". Is it truly incompatible, in spite of the HP 60 the replacement of the discontinued HP 901?  Or is the new HP 60 defective?
