Microsoft Windows XP

A week ago my HP 7660 Printer suddenly stopped printing red, even though it showed a full color carriage. I since ordered a new #57 color cartage, Cleaned the heads 6 times, 2 times in each level, and deleted and reloaded the 7660 operating program, and it still will not print red. It prints yellow instead and even the black is faded , even after I replaced the black cartage also.

Does anyone have a suggestion

@Autoracingbear, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Your issue with the HP 7660 printer not printing red, even after several attempts at cleaning and replacing the cartridges, can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Verify Cartridge Installation

Ensure that both the color and black cartridges are installed correctly. Sometimes, improper installation can lead to printing issues.

2. Clean the Printer Heads Manually

While automatic cleaning is usually effective, sometimes manual cleaning can help to clear stubborn clogs.

  • Remove the Cartridges: Turn off the printer and remove both cartridges.
  • Clean the Cartridges: Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean the contacts on the cartridges and the printer.
  • Blot the Printheads: Carefully blot the printheads on the cartridges using the cloth dampened with distilled water.

3. Check Printer Settings

Ensure that the printer settings are configured correctly.

  • Color Settings: Double-check that you are printing in color and not grayscale.
  • Print Quality: Set the print quality to "Best" to ensure all colors are used properly.

4. Run HP Printer Diagnostic Tools

HP provides diagnostic tools that can help identify and resolve printing issues.

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP support website.
  • Embedded Web Server: Some HP printers have an embedded web server for additional troubleshooting.

5. Reset the Printer

Performing a hard reset can sometimes resolve issues with the printer not recognizing new cartridges:

  • Turn Off and Unplug: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

6. Check Ink Cartridges for Damage

Inspect the replaced cartridges for any signs of damage or defects. Sometimes, even new cartridges can be faulty.

7. Align the Printhead

Aligning the printhead can help correct color printing issues:

  • Initiate Alignment: From the printer's control panel or the HP software, choose the option to align the printhead.

8. Software and Firmware Updates

Ensure that both the printer driver and firmware are up to date:

  • Download Updates: Visit the HP support website to download the latest updates for your printer.
